What it does: Pharmacy benefits manager, medical software supplier
How it grew: Initially a supplier of medical software, SXC Health Solutions bought a pharmacy-benefits manager in 2008 and suddenly found itself in the drug-dispensing business. It's proven to be good at it, concentrating on smaller employers, nursing home chains and state Medicaid programs often overlooked by bigger PBMs such as CVS Caremark Corp. In March, SXC landed its largest client yet, Health- Spring Inc. of Nashville, Tenn., a Medicaid specialist overseeing $1 billion annually in drug spending.*
